Nature and Uses
Welcome! At Greenhill School, the Nature and Uses of Language is an Upper School English course that "explores the interaction of language and cultural change in a variety of media from print to visual images. The class reads critically to decode the larger meaning of language within its cultural and social context." Throughout the trimester, this class has discussed and written about the personal and political consequences of language—the difficulty of living up to our names, the changing ways we speak about race, the surprising effects that one’s gender has on one’s language, the rhetoric by which our school shapes this community, the way teachers address student performance, the way we use language in order to avoid thinking…and now for the next 3 weeks the language of cinema and the Internet.
